2011 GMC Sierra 3500HD Overview

While exterior changes are limited to a new louvered hood, front bumper and grille, most of the 2011 GMC Sierra 3500HD's mechanical and structural components (including frame, engines, transmissions, suspension, and brakes) have been redesigned, strengthened or improved. Like all Sierras, the 3500HD is available in a wide array of bed sizes, wheelbases, drive types and cab sizes, as well as a variety of trim levels.

The standard 360-horsepower 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine's new camshaft profile helps the engine produce more torque lower in the rpm band, for improved launch feel and a greater feeling of overall performancewhen towing a trailer and at higher altitudes. The revised and optional 397-hp/765 lb-ft torque (335-hp/685 lb-ft torque with Box Delete option) B20 biodiesel-capable Duramax 6.6-liter diesel is more powerful and durable, and the Allison 1000 transmission is stronger for 2011. The stiffer, fully-boxed frame improves durability and ride, while supporting increased capability. The redesigned torsion bar front suspension allows for a greater front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). The rear suspension uses wider leaf springs - now asymmetrical to reduce axle hop - that contribute to improved ride and handling characteristics and increased rear GAWR. Larger brakes deliver smoother, more immediate and confident-feeling performance and diesel engines now include an exhaust brake. Stability control, hill start assist and a trailer sway control system are standard on single rear wheel trucks. Available features include mobile WiFi, USB connectivity, rear back-up camera, Bluetooth connectivity, XM satellite radio, OnStar 9.0 and a navigation system.

A new frame, an improved Vortec V8, a new Duramax diesel and Allison transmission, new front and rear suspensions, and an improved brake system combine to make GMC Sierra 3500HD one of the most capable line of trucks on the road.

 2011 GMC Sierra 3500HD
All-new, with new diesel, new Denali models.

Introduction

The GMC Sierra HD line of heavy duty trucks has been reengineered from the ground up for 2011, with a new frame, new front and rear suspensions, bigger brakes, and a new, more powerful Duramax 6.6-liter turbo diesel.

At the same time, a luxurious new Denali model brings premium features and styling to the heavy-duty line. The Sierra Denali HD is a 2500HD Crew Cab with a choice of Vortec 6.0-liter V8 or the Duramax diesel with the latest Allison six-speed automatic.

GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickups are well-suited for real-world use and abuse. They can haul tons of brick and cement and tow the concrete pump, then turn around to be used for a night on the town or grocery shopping while the fifth-wheel's left in camp or the horses are in the corral. If your hauling happens once or twice a year or you tow a bass boat or ski boat, then the 1500-series may be better suited.
